What a special day we had today!  We loved having Mismatch Day with lots of kids wearing mismatched shoes and socks.  We reread Marisol McDonald Doesn't Match by Monica Brown and talked about the main idea.  We love Marisol's style and creativity!  Ask me to tell you about Marisol.
We had an assembly courtesy of the PTA.  What a fantastic show it was!  Now I am not saying our class ran away with the show, but we did have three kids picked to be in the show!  This show was about science, math and test taking strategies. Here are a few pictures from the show!

We had Talent Time today.  We had two great singers and two great pianists!  

We ended our day by thinking about the external features of animals, and visualized what these animals would look like if their external features were mixed up!  We made pictures of the animals we imagined!

We had a busy week with our reading assessment window opening this week.  Each student is assessed with a book to determine their reading level.  They are asked comprehension questions and at some levels, Level 16 and Level M, they are given a writing assessment as well.  After level 16, we begin to use letters for levels, beginning with J.  The end of the year kindergarten reading level benchmark is a level 6.  Sometimes children will need to read a couple books to get to their frustration level, which is where the book is not a good match for them to maintain their reading comprehension.
While I have been testing, students have been working to finish the biographies they are writing about a classmate.  They are doing a great job and have enjoyed learning more about their friends.

We had a fantastic trip to the College Park Aviation Museum.  The kids were so well-behaved and the staff at the museum has the trip organized so well that the kids learn things, play, and get to see so much in a short time.  Here are a few photos of our class at the museum.

What a busy day we had!  This morning we went to an amazing assembly for Black History Month.  This assembly was rescheduled due to bad weather, but we are so glad we got to see it now.  The performers are students from our school or from Cabin John and Churchill.  They danced, sang and one student did a one woman short play about Harriet Tubman.  This was part of their show that will be repeated tonight in the APR Room at 7:00.  

We worked more on our biographies today.  The students are doing a great job of telling about their classmate and asking even more questions to add more details to their book.

We had Talent Time once again today.  We had a magician, a comedian tell knock-knock jokes , a dancer, a bird watcher, and two children show their basketball skills.  We also had a crafter, and she had photographs that showed how she makes bath bombs.  Every child got a bath bomb, so be sure to check their backpacks!  They know you get to decide when and how they use them.  ​

We are enjoying Talent Time and are so impressed with the talent in our class, and their creative families!

We actually got to see DC6 officially arrive at 12:16.  We were able to catch a glimpse or two of the whole in the egg in the morning, and the camera zoomed in so we were able to see the beak trying to open the egg more.  The pip started yesterday, so it takes a while to get out of that egg.  We should be seeing a pip in the other egg in the next day or two.  DC6 is tired, fluffy and I think adorable.

We worked with place value today.  We looked at how we can count by tens and then count on by ones.  We will be continuing this work but will also continue to work with decomposing as well as story problems, both addition and subtraction.

We had our first Talent Time today.  We enjoyed our performers and they did an awesome job.  Here are some pics of our talented friends!

Yesterday we decorated our recycling bin for the annual Earth Day Recycling Bin contest.  We studied two paintings and thought about what the artists' message was in each.  We came up with four clear ideas; love the Earth, be gentle with the Earth, take care of the Earth, and share the Earth.  We talked about what nature is and made pictures of animals and plants.  We were inspired by Romero Britto's picture and made our plants and animals in his style.

We also talked a little about Dr. Jane Goodall and how she talks about acting locally to make change.  We thought of a little change we could make that day.  We decided to try not to use plastic straws at lunch and drink right out of the milk container.  Ask me to tell you why this is important!  

Today we had a very special day in honor of National Kindergarten Day tomorrow.  Yes, National Kindergarten Day is a real thing!  A few weeks ago the kids were asking why there is a Mother's Day and Father's Day but no kids' day.  I told them every day is kids' day but they didn't seem content with that.  I happen to be on a website with lists of special days and saw National Kindergarten Day so I told them we would celebrate it today.  We watched a special movie called Bears.  This is a Disneynature movie, and I was hoping we could have a Meet Me at the Movies Night for the release of this year's Disneynature movie called Dolphins, but it doesn't seem to be showing anywhere close, so I showed Bears today instead.  This movie is about a mother bear, Sky, who takes her two little cubs on a journey for food.  Along the way there are predators and other obstacles that make this journey long and dangerous.  I highly recommend this movie if you are ever looking for a movie night movie for the family.  I told the kids before the movie that all the bears are okay at the end of the movie, and that they would see some bears fighting and a few parts that might be sad, but everything turns out in the end.  Disneynature films for two to three years to produce these movies, and they do not stage or change anything that happens because it is a documentary.  The kids will have lots to tell you about this movie!

In math we've been working with addition and subtraction.  We starting working with problems adding or subtracting three using the counting-on strategy.  
I'll be sending out an e-mail over the weekend with lots of upcoming activities and the date of our end of the year program.

Did you know it is National Dandelion Day?  That gave us a great opportunity to study dandelions and sneak in a little more science today.  We learned about plants earlier in the year, but we also learn about them in the spring.  We studied photographs of dandelions and noticed their external features.  We talked about how these features help the dandelion survive.  Ask me to tell you about what I noticed and learned about dandelions.
We are getting ready to write an information book about an animal.  We have learned about research in the library with Mrs. Floyd, and we have worked on learning and using text features in class, so today we learned about to take notes to help when we write our book.  We used a simple organizer that had the words can, have and are at the top of columns.  Then, as we read, we put short phrases in to remind ourselves of information we wanted to use in our book.  The kids enjoyed learning about owls and did a great job of copying what I wrote on the board onto their organizer.  The children will be choosing an animal to research tomorrow and will begin gathering information to use in their book.
