Ask Me About Thursday, September 8, 2016

Just a quick note today about our day.  I think today the long school day and heat caught up to the kids.  We got huge drinks after lunch, but about ten minutes later one of the kids reported that they had hot lips, so I sent her to get a drink.  This seemed like a good idea to about six more friends, who all reported "hot lips" as well. At this point, I just sent them all for another long drink. Hopefully this hot weather will pass soon!  I am really ready for fall.
We talked about rules again and why we have rules.  The children shared rules they have at home.  We read a poem together, and the children drew a picture of a rule they have at home on the back.  Ask me to tell you about the rule I drew and why that rule is important..
Today we had two drills back-to-back. Of course it was just after I explained the computer station for math workshop, and got everyone working in a station!!!! The first drill was an earthquake drill.  I stressed this was pretend, but a few children were a little concerned I think.  The children did a great job of going under the tables and sitting like a turtle.  Ask me to show you how I sat under a table.  Then we went into a severe weather drill.  All I told the kids was that we needed to go in the hall away from the windows in case the weather got bad and something blew into it and broke glass.  We went in the hall and sat against the wall with our knees up and heads down.  The classes upstairs come down as well, and because of the glass in the doors at the end of the hall, they have to fill in to cover the entire hall.  It was very orderly, and all the classes really did a great job with this drill.  It's tricky knowing how much to tell the children and talk about with them, but you may want to check in with them just to be sure they are not anxious about the drills and weather.  This was a scheduled drill, and somehow every time we do these drills, it just happens it's before or after severe weather!  We are studying weather, but I chose to skip the storm book I was going to read today, and we just ended the day by playing.
We're going to take it easy tomorrow and get our routines back on track, and give the kids more time to unwind during the day.  The reading testing window does open tomorrow, so I will begin that, but the kids usually really like that!  But I will tell you, they are ready for their long weekend!

Have a nice evening!
