Today we worked with short and long i.  We read a poem that had many i words in it, in fact only 10 didn't have an in them!  We circled the short i words and drew a line under the words with long i.  We thought about whether the i made a sound like the beginning of the word iguana, or sang out it's letter name.  Ask me to show you my poem and the illustration I made for the poem.  This poem is actually part of a book of poems by Maurice Sendak called chicken Soup with Rice.  We also found out the poem we read was actually made into a song and sung by Carole King.  Enjoy!
We did a spelling check-up today to see how we are doing learning to spell our Word Wall Words.  Next week I will send home the words the children need to practice. They are doing a great job learning to read and write these words "just like that!"
Over the next few school days, we will be watching Disney Nature's Bears movie.  This movie follows a mother bear and her two cubs through their first year of life.  This stunningly beautiful movie was filmed in Alaska.  Although the cubs are born in a protected area, the rest of the movie is filmed in the wild with no interference from Disney or the scientists who helped in making this movie.  Ask me to tell you about the first part of the movie when the cubs are born and make the long journey down the mountain to the valley in the spring.  I have reassured the children that the cubs and their mother survive the first year, and that even though there are a couple parts that might be a little scary, the cubs and mother bear survive.
Here's the trailer for Disneynature's Bears.
Have a great weekend!
