We are writing about memories in Writing Workshop. We read the story Big Mama's by Donald Crews and were surprised at the end to see the author at the end of the book. Donald Crews shared a memory about visiting his grandparents in the summer. Today we thought of a special memory and began writing a book about it. We thought about what would be at the beginning of our story, the middle and the end. Some kids had trouble understanding what a memory was and wanted to write about things that were going to happen soon. Looking through pictures of special times might be a good way to reinforce their understanding of a memory and talking about it will help them with their storytelling. Telling stories from pictures is a great way to help beginning writers. I shared two pictures of my me with my sister and brother in the mountains in a jeep, and once they got over how old the picture looked, I think just maybe they began to believe it was really me in the picture! Then, I began writing my memory using those pictures as my inspiration.
