What an amazing start to our kindergarten school year! The children were such good listeners, patient when they needed to be, and followed directions well. We read a great book called "You're Finally Here!" by Melanie Watt about a rabbit who was waiting on a reader. The rabbit goes through several different feelings as he is asking the reader where they have been. Ask me to tell you how the rabbit was feeling! (Parents, the ask me questions are for you to ask your child to help you talk about their day.)
We began learning a few routines today that we will be practicing throughout the week. Our morning routines are really important. The children will be coming to the classroom in the morning, hanging their backpack on the hook in their cubby, putting their lunchbox on the bottom of the cubby, and putting their red folder in the basket by the door. They will sign in on our Promethean Board to order lunch or to show they are a packer, then get a drink and use the restroom if necessary. Then they will read books until our transition music comes on that signals they need to finish reading their book and come to the carpet. As our classroom routine becomes more normal, they will be prompted several times throughout the day to get drinks. They learned three signals today for bathroom, yes and no so they can use our restroom when they need to. I will, however, remind them throughout the day to go. The children were great in the cafeteria. They raised their hand if they needed help opening something, but for the most part they were able to start eating right away because they could do that on their own. They were not too loud in the cafeteria and chatted with people around them as they ate. I will eat with the children every day unless their is a meeting I need to attend, and I will rotate which table group eats at the teacher table. We had a couple children that did more talking than eating, even with reminders, so if you child says they didn't have time to eat, this may be why and we will continue to encourage them to eat. We did not go outside for recess today because of the excessive heat. We will not go out when the heat index is so high. The children had indoor recess today and played so nicely. Mr. Amadour covers recess for our class and he really had very little to do! Ask me to tell you what I did at recess! I will try and blog, and would love to put pictures of the class and what we are doing on the website as well so you have a better idea of our day. We will be working through many routines this week, as well as a tour of the school to meet different people in our building, but we want to get the children in a routine as soon as possible so we can begin testing and putting children in groups for reading. I can't thank all of you enough for sending twenty happy little people to school today who know it's important to listen and follow directions. I asked them if they learned to be such good listeners in preschool, and they all shook their head no. Then I asked if they learned it from their parents, and they said yes, so thank-you! I'm not going to say it was an easy day, but it was the easiest first day I've had maybe ever! Have a nice evening! Miss Wolfe
