Today we read a beautiful story called The Name Jar.  This book is about a little girl who moves from Korea to the United States.  Many children can not say her Korean name correctly, and some even teased her.  She thinks about changing her name to American name for school. Ask me about what happened!  As we read this book, we stopped along the way to answer questions about the story.  Stopping to check understanding as you read is an important strategy to learn.  It's important for readers to remember that reading the words is just one part of reading, but understanding what you read is just as important, if not more important.
In Writing Workshop, we worked on adding more details to our stories.  Rehearsing what we are going to write with a partner before we start is a great way to help our writing sound like a story. 
We also worked on two new word wall words, go and here, and worked on writing the numbers 3, 5 and tricky 8.  We ended our day by listening to the story The Numberlys. This is a very unique book about what the world would be like with only numbers, no letters, not words, not even pizza or jellybeans!  This book was written by William Joyce and has a app that will allow you to interact with the book.  Check out the trailer!
