We are starting to wilt a little as this first week winds down!  No one fell asleep, but I think I sent home some tired little friends today!

We are continuing to learn class and school routines.  We practiced a fire drill this morning just with kindergarten.  The kids did a great job leaving the room quietly, walked down the sidewalk to enter the side gate, standing quietly and looking at the townhouses instead of back at the school, and listening for directions.  We did not hear the alarm the school has, but I reassured them that it is a quiet alarm, not a loud bell or high-pitched sound, but instead is mostly a voice that comes on telling us to leave the building.  I was really proud of how well they did on the first practice!

I ate lunch with the children today, and probably will most days this year.  They did a great job sitting on the bench on their bottoms, talking quietly with children near them, and eating their lunch.  We try to get them to stay in their seats and raise their hand for help if they need it instead of getting up and walking around, and most of them are doing that.  It was so nice to get to chat with the kids because they are so anxious to tell me stories, but during class it's difficult to have the time to really chat.

In reading, we read a story about a little boy named Dennis who is very quiet and shy.  The little boy likes to mime instead, and he finds a friend who likes to mime as well.  Ask me to show you something I can mime.  

We read a story about a little girl named Katy who is starting school.  When her parents try to get her up in the morning, she does not want to go to school.  We saw thinking bubbles that showed what she was thinking might happen.  Her feelings change throughout the story.  We drew a picture that showed how we felt when we woke up on the first day of school, and shared with the class our picture and how we felt.  Ask me to tell you about how Katy felt when she woke up.

In math we worked with exactly the same.  We practiced our routine of how we will rip out the page, write names at the top of the page, and quickly do the application problem, which is usually review.  They just needed to copy the blue sock today, but they were very slow, so I tried help them understand in math when we do a drawing of something, we are working neatly but quickly.  They did a great job ripping out the page in the workbook.  You will see a checkmark on the page that shows I saw their work.  We will talk more about math at Back to School Night next week.

We read a silly rules book called The Rules, by Marty Kelley.  Ask me to tell you some of the silly rules in the book!
