We studied this Norman Rockwell painting today.  We looked closely at the people in the painting and talked about how it looked like they were feeling.  We thought about why they might be feeling the way they did and we noticed not everyone had the same feelings.  Ask me to tell you what I noticed and wondered about after studying this painting.
We spent time today blending a beginning sound with a couple more sounds to make a word.  The children are getting very good at this!  We worked with the /g/ and practiced writing the letter g.  We had an interesting discussion about being perfect.  The handwriting papers we are doing now are practice.  It isn't expected to be perfect because they are learning something new.  We looked at the words on one of the walls in our room that says "Mistakes allowed here!" to remind the children that as they learn new things, they will make mistakes.  I discourage erasing when they are practicing handwriting or even writing stories, which we will be doing more of very soon!  I would rather they fix up their writing after they have written a first draft.  At this point, that isn't an expectation.  But we do love erasers in this class!
We listened to a beautiful story about friendship called Friends, by Helme Heine.  This book is the story of three animal friends who love to be together.  Ask me to tell you what things they did together in the book.
