Our afternoon started with a clip from Singing in the Rain! We loved it! Many little bodies were rocking, many sat motionless glued to the screen, and one of our friends had his hand up with a thumbs up almost the whole clip. We watched the part where Gene Kelly dances in the rain and puddles.
Then we designed rain sticks. This is a challenging STEM project where students try out different materials to make a tube that sounds like rain. We listened to a real rain stick and studied a rain stick inside an O-Ball. We also looked at photographs of a rain stick made from a cactus. We analyzed it, looking for the important parts we would have to replicate to make our cardboard tubes into rain sticks. It was a ambitious task, but our kinders worked hard to improve their design to make the best rain stick they could.
The only homework for tonight is to practice putting on winter coats and zipping them on your own, and to take a fall walk outside tonight or tomorrow sometime. We will be talking about the seasons the rest of the week. We had several kinders try to go outside at recess without their coat today even after being told to be sure they had their coat on and zipped. At the end of the day, after at least 5 reminders to put their coats on and zip them, I had at least 5 kids with their coats in their backpacks who would be going outside. On cold days, I require kids to wear to recess and home what they were sent to school wearing. We do go outside to recess unless it is very cold, so please remind your children to dress appropriately.
These kinders worked hard today, but had lots of fun. Enjoy the day off!
