We had a great second day of kindergarten. We started our day with our Picture Talk. We talked about what we noticed in the picture above and thought about what might be happening in the picture. We looked at the different parts of the picture and put them together to get an idea of what was happening in the picture. We practiced the routine of our Picture Talk. The children are in assigned spots on the carpet so they can easily turn and talk to a partner. For our Picture Talk they study the picture first on their own getting ideas in their head, then turn knee to knee and talk with their partner, then we share our ideas together. They were a little hesitant about what to say about the picture with their partner so I guided them through, asking questions and encouraging them to look at the people, the place, and what was happening. Ask me to tell you about the picture. We read a book called Kindergarten, Where Kindness Matters Everyday, by Vera Ahiyya. This book tells the story of a little boy who is starting school but very worried about other children being loud and having to talk in class. The story also talks about kindergarten being "kind"ergarten, where children are kind to each other. We stopped before we got to the parts where the children talked about being kind and brainstormed our own ideas of what kindness is and how it looks in kindergarten. Then we finished the book and found a few other ways we can be kind. We will revisit this story tomorrow and read their Kindness Pledge. Nursery Rhymes are our first unit in our new reading program. We read the rhyme Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet and so are you. We practiced this so we could recite it to you on our own. Ask me to tell you the nursery rhyme about roses. We learned about rhyming words and how the ending of the words sound the same. We listened to some nursery rhymes and tried to identify the rhyming words. We also spent time with a partner and looked at a collection of Nursery Rhyme books. In our reading instruction, we also practiced identifying left and right. They had a fun time practicing with this video, so I told them I would put it on our blog so you could see it too. We had outdoor recess today. The children learned about where they were to play and to listen for the whistle. We went to Art after recess and met Mrs. Park.
We are working hard on learning routines, traffic patterns in the classroom, and how to be a listener. These are so important that we take time to practice and learn them, but soon they will be automatic for them and we will be able to get through more each day. Have a great evening! Miss Wolfe
