These kinders are working so hard! They are learning routines and helping each other. Each day I am amazed at how well they remember the routines and where to sit on the carpet. We are working to stay in our personal space which means on the carpet they have to sit flat on their boom-boom and like a pretzel. We read the book I Promise by LeBron James. This book is about promises that are recited each day at the I Promise School in my hometown of Akron, Ohio. This book has important ideas about what you can do to be a good learner. I know Lebron has many fans but also many who dislike him, but LeBron is pretty special to our family because he was raised in the projects of Akron, just like my mom. In fact, the apartment LeBron and my mom's family moved into when they got out of the projects was on the same road. So my mom became a huge LeBron fan and actually watched basketball for quite a while. I am sending home a copy of the book for each child that you may keep. I hope you enjoy the book. Today we got out our reading workbooks for the first day. We learned how to tear out a page, which we will be doing in math and reading. It's tricky at first, so if your child comes home with one that is a little raggity, know that it will get better. They reviewed drawing vertical lines today. Many of the pages in the book are Take Home pages for the caregivers with information about what we are doing in class, along with ideas of how you can support their learning. Another part of our reading skills lesson was to practice strengthening our fingers. They were to use toys like beads and small items, so we had a fun time exploring some of the things we have on shelves either for playtime or for station time when we have it. Once I get all the permission slips returned for the website I'll post some pictures! Ask me to tell you which toy was my favorite when we practiced strengthening our fingers. We continued to talk about the same, exactly the same and not exactly the same. We practiced matching socks today. We played music and each picked a sock out of a bag and walked around to find the sock that was exactly the same. We talked yesterday and today about fire drills. We will have a fire drill tomorrow. We will go slow and make it simple and stress-free. We talked about what we are not to do, and I was surprised at the answers I got. They remembered a lot of what I talked about yesterday, but needed help remembering not to talk. But they remembered to not look at the school or as I told them to look at the houses on the hill, not to run, and not to be worried about the sound of the alarm because it's mostly a voice. We take Brain Breaks a couple times a day to get rid of some of our wiggles. Today we listened to a long one which I usually will only do on Mondays when we don't have a special outside the room. I will post it below because one of our friends was out of the room and walked in at the end, but also because these Disney Family Workouts are very well done. Enjoy! Have a great evening!
